SEO Services Company in South Africa for Ecommerce and Shopify Brands

Professional SEO services for South African online stores that want more organic traffic, more orders and a bigger share of searches that currently go to Takealot and the big retailers. Technical SEO, product and collection pages, content, local SEO and AI search, run by a Shopify-only team.

The opportunity

South African Shoppers Are Moving Online, Fast

Online retail in South Africa reached about R96 billion in 2024, growing 35% in a single year, and is forecast to pass R130 billion in 2025, close to one rand in every ten spent on retail. That growth is not only going to the marketplaces. Specialist local stores and international brands shipping into South Africa are picking up shoppers who search for something specific and want a store that clearly knows the product.

For an ecommerce business, that makes search the most important shelf in the country. People compare on Google before they buy, ask AI assistants for recommendations, and return to the stores they found the first time. SEO is how you earn that first visit without paying for every click. Paid search still has a place alongside it, and our guide to Google Ads vs SEO for Shopify explains how to split budget between them, while our Google Ads management covers the searches SEO has not reached yet.

Why specialist SEO

What Makes SEO in South Africa Different

Ranking in South Africa is not a smaller version of ranking in the US or UK. The search results are shaped by a handful of very strong local sites, a fast-changing marketplace scene and shoppers who are careful with both money and mobile data.

Takealot has been the default online store for years, and Amazon.co.za arrived in 2024. Both rank for huge numbers of product searches. Big retailers such as Mr Price, Woolworths and Makro have strong domains too. A smaller store cannot outspend them, but it can out-specialise them: deeper category pages, better product information, faster mobile pages and answers to the questions shoppers actually ask.

There are practical differences as well. Prices need to be shown in rand, including VAT. Delivery costs and times to smaller towns matter. Payment options look different because Shopify Payments is not available in South Africa, so stores rely on gateways such as Payfast, Yoco, Peach Payments and Ozow. All of this affects how product pages should be written, which pages earn links and what makes a shopper trust a store they have never heard of.

Our view: the stores that win South African search are rarely the biggest. They are the clearest. Clear structure, clear product facts, clear prices and delivery terms, and a site that loads quickly on a mid-range Android phone.

What we do

Our SEO Services in South Africa

Each engagement is built from the parts your store needs. Select a service to see what the work involves.

Local knowledge

Built Around How South Africans Shop Online

Good SEO brings the right visitors. These local habits decide whether those visitors buy, so we build them into every page we optimise, and pair SEO with conversion rate optimisation where it matters.

Mobile first, data aware

Most shoppers browse on their phones, and data is still expensive for many households. Light pages, compressed images and fewer apps are a ranking factor and a sales factor.

Local payment options

Shopify Payments is not available in South Africa, so we make sure your Payfast, Yoco, Peach Payments, Ozow or buy-now-pay-later options are visible before checkout, where they build trust.

Delivery and collection

Courier costs, delivery times to smaller towns and pickup options such as Pargo points and PUDO lockers all influence the decision. We surface them on product pages and in FAQs.

Marketplace competition

Takealot and Amazon.co.za rank for many product searches. We focus your effort on the specialist searches, bundles and categories where a dedicated store can be the better answer.

Black Friday and payday

Black Friday is the biggest online sales event of the year, and many people shop around month-end paydays. Seasonal pages need to rank weeks before the money is spent.

Language and local terms

English dominates search, but South Africa has 12 official languages and its own vocabulary. We research the words locals use, from "braai" to "school shoes", not just US keyword lists.

Across the country

SEO for Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Beyond

Most of our South African work is national ecommerce SEO: selling to the whole country from one website. Where you also have a showroom, warehouse collection point or service area, we add local SEO for the cities that matter to you.

Selling beyond South Africa as well? We also help brands grow in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia, and can plan multi-country SEO from one store.

We work across most ecommerce categories, including fashion and apparel, beauty and skincare, health and supplements, jewellery, kids and baby and sports and fitness, plus home and lifestyle.

Pricing

What SEO Services Cost in South Africa

SEO pricing in South Africa varies widely. Some providers offer packages for a few thousand rand a month, while full-service agency retainers often run to R20,000 or more. The price on its own tells you very little. What matters is what is actually done each month and whether it is tied to sales.

Before you compare quotes, ask each provider:

  • How many hours or deliverables are included each month?
  • Who does the work, and will you speak to them directly?
  • Is content, link building or technical work included, or charged extra?
  • How is success reported: rankings only, or traffic, orders and revenue?
  • What is the minimum contract, and what happens if you stop?
